DJW "Asa no Kai"

This morning, DJW hosted its latest edition of "Asa no Kai" in Düsseldorf. More than 50 people attended the event which was all about crisis communication. In particular, the interactive session highlighted the challenges Japanese companies are facing in Germany in case of a cyber breach. 

The topic couldn’t be more relevant since a new General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR) is coming into force in the EU. As a result, reacting to and communicating a cyberattack will become much stricter. From May 25th this year, companies with customer data will face the challenge to report any cyber breach within 72 hours of detection to the regulators and also to the public. Without a doubt, GDPR is an urgent reason to talk about crisis preparedness. Dr. Jochen Legewie, Partner & Managing Director at CNC Japan, and his team presented an interactive simulation of a major cyber breach taking place at a large Japanese corporation operating in Germany. The guests had the chance to experience and learn how to deal with the crisis via a digital, fully interactive crisis simulation training called the “CNC Situation Room”.  

The lively discussion unveiled the multiple challenges an organization is facing in such a situation: from pushy journalists to outraged customers all the way to aligning messages with the headquarters in Japan. Dealing with a variety of internal and external stakeholders while the crisis unfolds in real-time certainly raised the awareness among the group how important it is to be prepared. Training is key and often determines the fate of a company’s reputation when hit by a crisis.

Jochen Legewie studied at Hitotsubashi University and Cologne University, where he obtained his Ph.D. in Economics. Spending 25 years in Japan, he has authored numerous books on business and politics, he is a sought after commentator on Japan business issues and regularly appears on TV in Japan. Jochen Legewie is one of the few foreign trustees of the business federation Keizai Doyukai and Vice-Chair of its Europe Committee. Since 2016, he has been serving as Member of the Board of the German Chamber of Commerce and Industry in Japan. Between 2001 and 2004, he was Executive Officer in charge of Communications at Mitsubishi Motors Corporation. Prior to this, he served as Vice-Director of the German Institute for Japanese Studies.
