Both the EU and Japan have set the target for their economies to become carbon neutral by 2050; By 2030, EU leaders aim to have 45% of all energy consumed in the EU coming from renewables, while Japan aims to generate 36%-38% of its energy from renewables. The energy landscape long dominated by large fossil fuel market players is changing at a rapid pace and new players are emerging with innovative solutions attracted by the perspective of huge markets. Can the private sector meet the challenge to create sufficient capacities to reach those targets in the face of technical constraints, supply chains pressures, skilled labour shortages and profitability issues? What are the necessary conditions for the development of competitive renewable energy markets? How can the EU and Japan cooperate to achieve their common objective of a decarbonized society?
