Background

• Fukushima Prefecture has set an ambitious goal to meet all local energy demand with renewable sources by 2040, developing diverse facilities for solar, wind, biomass, geothermal, and hydropower.
• The prefecture also hosts one of the world’s largest hydrogen production facilities, the Fukushima Hydrogen Energy Research Field (FH2R), and collaborates with companies such as Toyota to promote fuel cell vehicles and establish a hydrogen industry hub.
• In addition, Fukushima has ranked first in Japan for medical device component shipments for 14 consecutive years, forming one of the country’s leading medical device industry clusters.
• Fukushima Prefecture and NRW have been strengthening cooperation in renewable energy, hydrogen, and medical device sectors.
