In response to the fierce international competition resulting from increased globalization, as well as to labor shortages, utilizing modern ICT technologies in manufacturing and bringing the Internet of Things to the factories of the future is a critical issue. As product development cycles have shortened in recent years, there is a demand for greater flexibility in the configuration of production facilities equipment, and expectations for wireless communications are rising. Such phenomena are occurring worldwide, hence global solutions are required. In this forum, we will introduce the international efforts originating from Germany and Japan, which focus on utilizing the currently developed 5G standard as well as existing wireless technology, to realize future smart factories.
