On 17 July 2018, Presidents Jean-Claude Juncker and Donald Tusk together with Japanese Prime Minister Shinzo Abe signed the EU-Japan Economic Partnership Agreement (JEEPA) at the EU-Japan summit in Tokyo. The signature of the agreement is a strong signal to the world that two of its biggest economies still believe in open trade, opposing both unilateralism and protectionism.

The JEEPA is the biggest trade agreement ever negotiated by the EU. It will create an open trade zone covering over 600 million people. Moreover, it will have a global effect since the European Union (EU) and Japan contribute to more than a third of the world's gross domestic product (GDP). Beside the stepwise cancellation of 97% of the current tariffs, the agreement also governs inter alia the reduction of other barriers to trade, regulations for intellectual property rights and specifically regulations for pharmaceutical and medical products as well as food (recognition of international standards).

We hold this seminar with kind support of the Japanese-German Business Association (DJW) and the Japan External Trade Organization (JETRO). We will present the status of the current economic cooperation with Japan, the development of the EU-Japan partnership and the focal points of the agreement. Furthermore, you will become acquainted in more detail with aspects of the regulatory framework und intellectual property rights. The seminar will also take a closer look at the regulations regarding the industry of health food, functional food and super food.
