Working Group "Intercultural Management": Building Shared Values across Cultures

DJW members Dr. Rolf D. Schlunze, Carsten Watanabe, and Aoi Ono would like to invite you to contribute to the DJW Working Group "Intercultural Management". In our working group, we aim at discussing various intercultural aspects of working in a Japanese-German business environment. The DJW Working Group "Intercultural Management" meets on regular basis to discuss the topic of intercultural competence.

Building “shared values” across cultures sounds like a clear ideal – but is it truly achievable in everyday German-Japanese business practice? In this 道場 (Dojo) session, we will explore how individuals can find common ground and arrive at concrete solutions – even when both sides operate within fundamentally different frameworks of thinking and interpretation, sometimes despite speaking the same language. 

After a short kick-off by Rumi Hasegawa, the session will continue in 道場-style exchange (interactive, possibly with breakout rooms), focusing on practical insights that can be applied in real business situations, reflecting on

• Where do “shared values” succeed – and where is the breaking point?
• What happens when the same words hide completely different assumptions?
• How can individuals create workable alignment in high-stakes business situations?

Meeting Flow

During our meetings all participants are invited to share their opinion and alternative solutions to these issues. Participants have an opportunity to relate to each other by selecting the next speaker themselves. We would like to encourage everybody to contribute with your own experiences to improve our intercultural competence.
