Global travel came to a screeching halt at the beginning of 2020. This has led to a re-examination of how and why we travel. Travel service providers have spent the past years seeking new ways to rethink and reinvent traveling.
While carbon offset is increasingly common and offered by most major airlines and travel agencies, efforts to make a positive impact on the economy and the community of the destination visited are a comparatively new approach. For leisure tourism as well as for MICE travel, this means destinations off the beaten path, on the condition of supporting local businesses, and genuine interest and respect for the local community and their way of life.
Digitalization is another way to revolutionize travel offerings. Digital travel guides, QR codes with background information and virtual assistants provide opportunities for new services. Unified data hubs make travel planning seamless, and virtual reality allows people to experience historical and contemporary sights even when a person is unable to travel there.
Two travel professionals from Japan and Germany will introduce their approaches for travel innovations and discuss with participants about ways to reexamine how and why we travel.
