For DJW Japan, it was a fabulous start into the New Year. Together with the German Ambassador to Japan, Dr. Hans Carl von Werthern, we invited our corporate members to join a "Residence Executive Meeting" to discuss the economic prospects for 2018.
Kozo Koide, Chief Economist at Asset Management One, which is the largest Japanese asset management company, and our Chairman Gerhard Wiesheu, Partner at Metzler Private Banking, shared their views.
Both were of the opinion that it would be quite reasonable to be optimistic, as the global economy is in a good shape. Worldwide, inflation is expected to be low and stable. A GDP growth is expected for Japan as well as for Germany. An important trigger for our bilateral relations could be the EU-Japan Free Trade Agreement. Digitization is expected to be one of the major challenges and put pressure on inflation and wages – in spite of the economic upswing.
Anyway, we believe that – with regard to geopolitical developments – it is of high importance that Japan and Germany continue to take special care of their traditionally strong partnership.
