As Industry 4.0 is advancing and will further shape everyday lives, wireless sensor networks, embedded systems, lowcost robots and big data become topics of broadening interest. In order to master the demands and uprising – most of all – digital standards, (key) inventions at high-novelty level and quality are necessary. How do ongoing processes regarding digitalization and IoT affect the invention activities worldwide? Could they possibly be boosted by external parties? Which further changes can be expected with regard to research and development, intellectual property rights and patent applications in Germany and Japan?
